TEAMWorks is a community partnership between Pleasant Ridge Montessori School, Community Happens Here, and Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church to benefit our neighborhood children. TEAMWorks began five years ago as an after school program for students who could benefit from the tutoring and enrichment opportunities we offer. A year later, one-to-one mentoring was added to the program.
“No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship”
– Dr. James Comer
In order to grow and thrive, children need positive relationships with trusted adults. At TEAMWorks we seek to add another layer of positive relationships to the foundation of familial and other relationships these children have. Everything we do at TEAMWorks is grounded in the concepts of Social Emotional Learning, allowing us to effectively guide and support our students as they build and maintain healthy relationships with their mentors, tutors, and peers.
What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is how children gain the skills they need to be successful in school and life. These skills allow children to better understand themselves and others. With this understanding, they are able to engage in their communities in more positive ways.
Stress and its emotional consequences may be unavoidable, but expressing emotions in healthy ways means that children can better cope with the pressures of life. Our emotions and relationships affect how and what we learn and how we use what we learn in school, at home, and in the community.
We also believe that everyone functions better when they aren’t HANGRY. That’s why we serve healthy after-school snacks and dinner at TEAMWorks. Eating healthy food in a healthy environment is an important part of our community.
